FAM Trips for Travel Agents: The Insider Playbook

world-most-visited-cities-singapore

If you have never experienced a familiarization trip (FAM trip) or you have done several but have come out of them empty-handed, then definitely keep reading, this is meant for you! FAM trips are some of the least utilized methods of professional growth within the travel agent industry. When done effectively, they can definitely pay for themselves many times over, plus you get to travel for free or at a highly discounted rate!

What Are FAM Trips?

A FAM Trip refers to an excursion offered at a reduced price or even for free by travel industry vendors (hotels, resorts, cruise lines, tour operators, tourism boards, etc.) exclusively for travel agents. The purpose of the excursion is to help agents gain experience that enables selling of products much more efficiently.

It’s pretty simple, an agent who has personal experience will be able to sell much better, to close the deal faster, and to maintain relationships with customers longer! After going on several FAM trips every year for 10+ years now, I can honestly say I learn something new every time and it definitely helps with current clients and getting new ones! Plus I don’t have to make an excuse to go on a cruise or to Disney, it’s part of my career!

Definition and Purpose

A FAM trip is a promotional tour organized by travel suppliers, destination management organizations, hotels, resorts, cruise lines, or tourism boards with one primary purpose: to familiarize travel professionals with their offerings. As the travel industry becomes increasingly competitive, these educational experiences have become essential tools for both suppliers and travel agents alike.

Unlike regular vacations, FAM trips serve a distinct professional purpose. They typically include complimentary or heavily discounted accommodations, meals, and activities that showcase the highlights and unique selling points of locations or properties. The fundamental philosophy behind FAM trips is simple but powerful: when you’ve personally experienced a destination, you can sell it more effectively and authentically to your clients.

Types of FAM Trips

Not all FAMs are built the same. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right ones and set expectations before you go.

  1. Working FAM Trips: These feature fast-paced itineraries filled with multiple site inspections, tours, and scheduled networking sessions. They’re designed to maximize exposure and experience in a limited time frame, often requiring early mornings and long days.

  2. Experiential FAM Trips: These offer more relaxed schedules allowing for deeper immersion in local culture, often including leisurely activities alongside key tours. The goal is to create memorable experiences that you’ll vividly recall and share with your clients.

  3. Award FAM Trips: These exclusive, fully sponsored trips are offered to top-producing travel advisors as a reward for their performance. They recognize and further incentivize high performers while providing opportunities to experience luxury or unique aspects of a destination.

  4. Seminars at Sea: Similar to traditional FAM trips but offered specifically by cruise lines, giving agents the chance to experience ships and sailing itineraries firsthand.

  5. Virtual/Hybrid FAM: Remote property tours and digital walkthroughs, these are for time-limited agents and have been widely expanded since COVID.
  6. Micro-FAM: Small group (often 5-10 agents), highly targeted; niche specialists; growing bigger in 2025-2026.
  7. Self-FAM: Agent-arranged directly with properties; useful for less-trafficked destinations where group FAMs don’t exist.

Some agencies might choose to divide FAM trips into designed tours for beginner agents, intermediate, and advanced agents. The goal is to make the content suitable for your level of experience and not make you feel behind in any way. Some agents like it that way, others don’t. I like mixing all the agents together because it gives the newer agents an opportunity to learn and ask questions from the more experienced ones who have been on these trips before and know how to get the most out of them! It’s also just nice to get to know all the other agents in the agency and exchange information.

Who Gets Invited (And Why)

It’s hard to really specify who gets invited on these trips, because each one serves a different purpose. I work for an agency that does two major FAM trips each year, one to Disney (switched between Disney World and Disneyland) and one to Universal Studios. These bigger ones are for any agent who wants to come, they’re steeply discounted and are great for learning everything new happening at the parks! Then we have smaller trip opportunities for agents booking cruises, hotels, etc. Those ones have specific requirements in order to attend (certain amount of bookings already done) and there’s usually only a few spots available.

Some agencies might do things differently or require more certification to attend certain FAM trips. Suppliers always save a number of rooms, tickets, etc for travel agents and they usually leave it up to the host agency to decide who will fill those spots. Some agencies will let anyone who wants to go, to go, others might require a solid booking record in that particular area (cruises, theme parks, hotels, packages, etc).

Any good agency will have FAM trips that any agent can attend because it makes them a better agent in the long run by giving them real world experience, media opportunities, and a chance to meet with suppliers. So when you’re looking for a host agency to join be sure to ask about their FAM trips before joining and see if they have ones for anyone to attend.

Benefits of FAM Trips

For Travel Agents

The advantages of participating in FAM trips extend far beyond simply enjoying discounted travel! Here’s just a few reasons you should attend at least one trip a year:

  1. Firsthand Experience: There’s simply no substitute for experiencing a destination or service personally. When you’ve seen a resort or been on a cruise for yourself, you can better help your clients understand what to expect. The more first-hand experience you have, the better you will be able to choose the perfect vacation for your clients based on their wants and needs.

  2. Enhanced Credibility: Being able to say “I’ve been there” instills confidence in your clients. This authenticity builds trust that can’t be achieved through simply studying brochures or websites.

  3. Better Sales Ability: Detailed personal knowledge makes it easier to match clients with the right experiences. After a FAM trip, you’ll be better equipped to identify which clients would be perfect for specific properties or destinations.

  4. Marketing Content: FAM trips provide opportunities to gather photos, videos, and stories that can be used in your marketing efforts. Taking pictures and video during a site inspection has helped many agents “close the sale” by sharing authentic visuals and insights with clients.

  5. Professional Development: These trips allow you to expand your knowledge base and stay current with industry offerings and trends.

  6. Networking Opportunities: While on FAM trips, you’ll connect with other travel agents, sharing best practices and building relationships that can benefit your business for years to come.

For Suppliers and Hosts

From the perspective of suppliers and destinations, FAM trips are strategic marketing investments:

  1. Increased Sales: When travel agents experience a product firsthand, they’re more likely to recommend it to their clients.

  2. Brand Awareness: Hosting FAM trips generates buzz and awareness among influential industry professionals.

  3. Relationship Building: These trips foster personal connections with the travel professionals who can drive business their way.

  4. Education Opportunity: Suppliers can ensure travel agents have accurate, detailed knowledge about their offerings, resulting in better-qualified leads and bookings.

  5. Feedback Collection: FAM trips allow suppliers to gather valuable insights from industry professionals about their products and services.

How to Find FAM Trip Opportunities

There’s no need to wait for an invitation — consider the following sources to find FAM trips proactively:

  • Host agency — they have the strongest relations with the suppliers and their own exclusive FAMs
  • FAMRates.com — a directory of available FAM trips
  • Recommend.com — the site offers constantly updated FAMs and discounted rates for travel agents
  • Supplier newsletters — cruise lines, hotel chains and tour operators usually advertise their FAMs in emails
  • Associations such as ASTA and CLIA — FAMs are often included in member communications
  • Tourism boards’ websites — visit the travel trade sections of destination marketing organizations
  • Companies such as Intrepid Agent Hub and G Adventures — these operators have annual FAM programs open to application
  • Proactive approach — contact BDMs directly, it’s surprisingly effective

Timing is important! Some FAMs work on a first come first served basis. There’s usually only a certain number or hotel rooms, park tickets, cruise ship rooms, etc available, so you’ll want to be quick on deciding! If you’re with a good host agency they’ll usually send out information on upcoming trips to agents have time to prepare or figure out if they want to go. So it’s important to always look at the newsletter or email that your agency uses to inform you of these trips!

How to Qualify and Strengthen Your Application

Not all travel agents qualify for every FAM trip. As I mentioned above, some trips may require previous experience or a solid booking record in order to attend. For these smaller ones here’s some things you can do to improve your chances of attending:

  1. Make sure you have completed your supplier training — some hotels need (or really want) you to complete their online training before the FAM trip
  2. Show your sales record — any sales are better than no sales; prove your ability to generate business for your suppliers
  3. Showcase your social media presence — having many followers on social media or running a travel blog indicates your marketing skills to suppliers
  4. Find your speciality — specialized agents get the appropriate FAMs easier than non-specialized agents
  5. Interact with your host agency — agencies who know you exist and that you’re active will be more likely to recommend your name for the FAM trip

Preparing Before You Go

Preparation determines whether an agent returns home with great content and bookings or just photos. It might sound silly but preparing for your FAM trip (especially if it’s your first) is very beneficial! Here’s some things I recommend you do before leaving:

Do Your Homework

  • Learn about the destination and the supplier before arriving, and don’t forget to take any certification courses the brand may offer online
  • Make a list of the top 10 questions your clients ask about this type of vacation
  • Find out information about other attendees if you can, networking begins before you even arrive

What to Pack

  • Comfortable shoes for walking around. FAM trips cover a lot of ground, and often several venues in one day.
  • A portable battery charger, photo/video will suck up the battery very quickly
  • Lots of business cards to give to the staff as soon as you meet them, not only other agents
  • Some kind of system for taking notes, that could include a simple notepad, a tablet or something like the FamGuru app
  • Clothing that allows you to explore actively but also gives you a professional look during the meetings with suppliers

Content Goals

Before you start your trip, set goals for yourself, what kind of content are you going to create, a blog post, a video, a social media series? Having a plan helps you gather all the necessary material and where to find the best photo/video spots!

Making the Most of Your FAM Trip Experience

Arrive like a Pro

You are working and representing your agency, so be prompt, attend everything you are scheduled for, and treat all the employees with the same respect you would give a partner. You will meet the sales rep at this particular property who might help you with a client emergency in half a year.

Document with Purpose

Instead of photographing the room interior, photograph the vibes of the property (pool atmosphere, beach vibes, dining experience) these pictures will do much better job with convincing your client than standard hotel pictures! It’s also helpful with SEO which we’ll discuss more later.

  • Make short video clips while visiting properties; vertical videos work great on Instagram Reels and Facebook
  • I really like the Osmo Pocket, it’s small and takes amazing video/photos while auto stabilizing
  • Write brief pro/con lists immediately after leaving the property, that’s when your memories are still fresh

Act like a Matchmaker

While walking around each property, keep asking yourself, who of my clients will love this place? Use concrete names of clients rather than vague categories, such as, “Clients who like this will be families.” “Clients who will love this place will be Johnson family searching for a multigenerational vacation destination” is more useful.

Network with Intentions

Network not only with the suppliers but with your fellow agents as well! Exchange contact information and establish business connections that will lead you to building a real professional network. Many agents share stories of how their relationships with the suppliers that were established during FAM tours helped them to solve client problems (such as room upgrade or delayed arrival) that could not have been possible otherwise.

The 2025–2026 FAM Landscape: What’s Changed

FAMs are an ever-evolving process. We’ve seen a number of changes over the years that might affect you, but keep in mind that some of these are only being used by certain agencies or businesses. You can always ask before joining if an agency is participating in any of these.

They Are Smaller and More Selective

Group size has been reduced drastically. We don’t know if that’s because there’s more travel agents out there, if suppliers are reserving more space for paying guests, or the huge increase of social media influencers that do a lot of advertising for them. It’s probably a mix of all them. Either way, the groups are getting smaller in many areas, so you’ll want to jump on any opportunity that you can to attend an open FAM trip while also padding your resume with sales, experience, and a social media presence so you can attend the more exclusive trips.

Suppliers Prefer Social Media Influencers

Reach on social media is becoming one of the requirements for participating in FAM programs for many suppliers. An agent who publishes real-time content is working for the supplier by doing marketing for him while on the FAM. You are missing out on the FAM eligibility criteria points if you are not developing your social media platform.

Community Tourism and Sustainability

Tour operators such as G Adventures organize FAMs in line with their sustainable travel philosophy. For example, G Adventures’ 2025 FAMs take 150+ agents from Canada to 10+ destinations in order to learn about community tourism and Planeterra social impact projects. In 2026, Riviera Travel offers FAMs with expedition voyages, river cruises, and sustainable itineraries. Being knowledgeable about responsible travel and able to talk about it is highly valued by these suppliers.

AI Planning Tools Invade FAM Process

For 2025-2026, planning tools using AI are becoming a part of the FAM logistics of suppliers and FAM content management of agents. There are such AI tools as TravelFun.ai that provide agents with travel agent-specific AI apps for generating and automating content on social media. There are platforms such as FamGuru which enable agents to make FAM notes.

After You Return: Turning the FAM Into Revenue

The value of FAM comes to fruition in the weeks and months following your trip, assuming you have an effective strategy in place.

First 48 Hours

  • Write thank you emails to all hosts, staff contacts, and supplier representatives that you encountered on your trip
  • Sort through your photos and videos before your memories fade away
  • Create a comprehensive property description including everything from room types, configurations, dining options, amenities, unique characteristics – everything your clients will want to know
  • Compile your pros and cons for each property before you forget

Client List Development

Start with your current clients and determine those that could realistically use the experience you just had. This list will be your first order of business for marketing.

Content to Develop

FAM Trips and Taxes: What You Can Deduct

Not a lot of guides actually cover FAM tips and the tax deductions that you can use. So hopefully these will help you in the long run! Usually, a FAM trip is a deductible expense if it’s for your business. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The airfare is fully deductible in case the trip is mainly for business purposes
  • The hotel and meals have to be prorated in case you combine both personal and business days in your itinerary
  • Meals are 50% deductible while on overnight business travel
  • Keep track of your schedule each day and document all site inspections, visits to suppliers, and other destination research, this will be your best evidence in case the IRS asks why you were at that destination for business reasons
  • If the supplier pays your bills, you won’t have any deduction; just the out-of-pocket expenses count

Consult a tax advisor if you having any resevations. The IRS has specific rules regarding travel deductions, which can be complex and should be considered case-by-case.

SEO and AEO: How to Make Your FAM Content Work Harder

The publishing of your content after your FAM tour is the part of the process many people either skip or do quickly, which means they’re not capitalizing on their investment over time. Below are some recommendations on what you should be doing with your content:

The Traditional SEO Best Practices

  • Target long-tail keywords – use “best adults-only resort in Riviera Maya for couples” rather than “Mexico resort”; less competition, more conversions
  • Utilize destination-specific modifiers – “Riviera Maya travel tips from a travel agent” outperforms any other generic destination content
  • Go for 1,500-2,000+ words on major posts – longer content ranks higher
  • Optimize images – use meaningful file names (e.g., “adults-pool-secrets-akumal-riviera-maya.jpg”); include your keyword into the alt attribute
  • Build internal links – link to your FAM content from other relevant posts on your website

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) for 2026

Here comes the part that most of the travel agency blogs ignore entirely. As we move towards 2026, an increasing number of people rely on AI assistants (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and similar tools) when researching their travels. If you want to be cited by such AI tools, you’ll have to prepare your content differently:

  • Include a FAQ section on every FAM-related post – schema markup in FAQs helps to pull out information and use your answers directly in AI assistants
  • Create short, readable paragraphs (2-4 sentences) – no walls of text, because AI will be reluctant to cite your work
  • Provide complete and clear answers – lead with the answer first, then elaborate
  • Use structured headings – H2, H3 headings that answer search questions (e.g., “How do travel agents get invited on FAM trips?”)
  • Build topical authority – it takes more than just one post. Make clusters of related content: tips on FAM tours, review of FAM tour on particular destinations, etc.
  • Ensure content freshness – keep updating your posts regularly (at least once per year). AI prefers the content written within a year.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Seeing it as a personal vacation. This is the most prominent mistake made by agents on FAMs. Familiarization programs are organized learning and networking opportunities. Agents coming to a destination in a holiday mood miss the professional growth part, avoid less fun site inspections and come back with nothing to generate new bookings.
  • Skipping planned activities. No matter how unpleasant the morning walk around the hotel may seem, you have to go. You will lose one more opportunity to network and learn something about a certain property. All suppliers know who attended all sessions and who stayed away.
  • Failing to get direct contacts from FAM staff. Agents often exchange business cards with each other and call it networking. However, the value of such an event lies in direct communication with a resort coordinator, an events manager of the cruise ship or a regional sales representative, whose help could ensure getting a certain benefit for your customer.
  • Taking only the official pictures. There are all the pictures of rooms and other facilities of a particular supplier available online on their website. However, clients prefer the informal shots showing them the spirit of the destination. It could be the pool shot during the golden hour, beach bar, real balconies etc.
  • Returning home with no plan of what to do next. The value of Fam Trip is lost almost instantly if you do not use the impressions right after the program. Delayed reactions like writing a blogpost after two weeks or sending emails result in poor conversion and low engagement.
  • Avoiding the tax consideration. If you are a self-employed agent and pay from your pocket even partially for the trip, there are high chances that your expenses are deductible. However, if you fail to collect and keep all the necessary documents, you will not be able to take advantage of this possibility.
  • Writing blogposts without considering AEO rules. Producing quality content in hopes that Google will find it is outdated in 2026. Several years from now, an increasing number of research of future clients will take place in AI assistants. To be found in the answer engine results, you should consider the structure of this type of content.

A Note for New Agents

It is totally achievable to get on a FAM trip at the early stage of your career, but you need to put in some effort. Here’s what you can do:

  • Get your credential (IATAN, CLIA, or host agency affiliation)
  • Participate in the training program from your supplier
  • Create your social media account (even just basic)
  • Inquire from your host agency about the FAM trips and selection process
  • Submit an application as soon as possible and give your compelling reasons for being the best fit for that particular supplier

Not all of these are required to attend a trip, it’s important to keep that in mind. Every agency does things differently.

Real-Life Success Stories

Disney Parks FAM Trip Transformation

As a travel writer specializing in Disney theme parks, I attended a FAM trip to Walt Disney World during the 50th Anniversary celebration. During the trip, I was able to experience the newest attractions, stay at three different resort categories, and attend special events that were part of the celebration.

Upon returning, I created a series of blog posts comparing the different resort options with authentic photos showing room layouts and views. I also produced videos highlighting the anniversary celebrations and newest dining experiences. These materials resulted in a significant increase in Disney bookings over the next three months, with clients specifically mentioning that my firsthand knowledge and photos helped them make their decision.

Luxury Resort FAM Leading to Wedding Group Booking

A colleague specializing in destination weddings attended a FAM trip to a new luxury all-inclusive resort in Mexico. During the trip, she took detailed photos and videos of the wedding venues, met with the resort’s wedding coordinator, and experienced the various reception options. Within weeks of returning, she presented her findings to a couple considering their destination wedding options.

The authentic images of the ceremony locations, combined with her insider knowledge about the resort’s wedding packages and her personal connection with the coordinator, convinced the couple to book. This eventually led to a 50-person group booking worth over $100,000 in sales.

European River Cruise FAM Expanding a Niche

Another travel advisor primarily sold Caribbean vacations until attending a FAM on a European river cruise. The experience completely changed his perception of river cruising, which he had previously considered appropriate only for older travelers. After experiencing the active excursions, culinary experiences, and contemporary atmosphere firsthand, he began actively promoting river cruises to his existing clients.

Using videos and photos from his FAM trip in his marketing materials, he was able to dispel misconceptions about river cruising and attract a younger demographic. Within six months, river cruises represented a significant portion of his business, opening an entirely new revenue stream.

Tips from Experienced Travel Agents

Best Practices

  1. Stay Organized: Not all FAMs are organized the same way, but many of them have jam-packed itineraries. Develop a system for managing your time and information.

  2. Be Professional: Remember that you’re representing both yourself and your agency. Maintain professional behavior throughout the trip.

  3. Ask Questions: Don’t be shy about asking detailed questions. The more you learn, the better you can sell.

  4. Document Everything: Taking pictures and video during a site inspection can help you “close the sale” by sharing authentic visuals and insights with clients.

  5. Balance Work and Enjoyment: While these are working trips, it’s still important to enjoy the experience. There is usually time set aside for agents to relax and enjoy the pools, beaches, bars, and other activities.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Treating It Like a Vacation: A FAM trip is a professional development opportunity first and foremost.

  2. Skipping Activities: Missing scheduled activities means missing valuable learning opportunities.

  3. Failing to Network: Not connecting with suppliers and fellow agents wastes a key benefit of FAM trips.

  4. Inadequate Documentation: Not taking enough photos or notes can diminish the trip’s long-term value.

  5. No Follow-Up Plan: Without a strategy for implementing what you’ve learned, the FAM trip’s value diminishes quickly.
