Disney’s College of Disney Knowledge – Tips & Inside Information

If you’ve sold any type of travel product in the past five minutes, someone has mentioned Disney. Perhaps it was a group of three children under six. Maybe it was an older couple with a bucket list. Or maybe it was an individual with no shame in their love for Mickey.

And what have I learned after doing some heavy research on this subject? Most agents who think they know enough about Disney to sell it… don’t. And no, not because they’re failing in their job… but because Disney’s travel offerings are huge, continuously changing, and complex enough to require serious forethought. Every single agent who nails the Disney game shares something in common.

They took the College of Disney Knowledge… and they actually applied it.

Are you a new agent trying to figure out how to jumpstart your career with Disney? Are you an established agent who sells Disney products on the side and would like to take your career to the next level? Or perhaps you are certified in College of Disney Knowledge and haven’t looked at the portal since 2023? Let’s dive in.

What Exactly Is the College of Disney Knowledge?

The College of Disney Knowledge (CDK) is the officially recognized online education and training tool provided by Disney free of charge. It’s not some sort of gimmick designed to lure people into spending money on unnecessary courses. It’s a comprehensive self-study program aimed at providing travel agents with full-scale insight into the Disneyland vacations offered by Disney.

Imagine having access to a backstage pass. The CDK is the kind of program you learn from when you need a detailed understanding of everything you will encounter working with Disney. It’s all about what makes it tick, how Disney products actually function from the traveler’s perspective, and how they should be sold depending on what a certain client needs.

The CDK can be found on the website of Disney Travel Agents, which is another name for the DisneyTravelAgents.com portal created for travel professionals. Registration for accessing the resource is mandatory and should include the IATA/CLIA number of the host agency.

This being said, my personal recommendation to you based on thorough research into the issue would be to think of the CDK not as training per se but rather as the key for opening an entirely new set of doors.

The Five Core Modules

Module 1

This course covers the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Unlike other online sources or courses, CDK goes beyond superficially discussing various components of this resort. In this module, one learns about the four parks that constitute this resort: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom; resort classifications, ticketing information; dining reservations and options; transportation modes; Lightning Lane reservations for fast access to rides, and special parties such as the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!

What sets CDK apart? This module contains detailed information about booking windows and crucial knowledge for every successful Disney specialist! For example, you’ll learn when dining reservations open – 60 days in advance of one’s visit, and Lightning Lane reservations open seven days in advance for on-property guests only.

Module 2

It discusses the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA. This Disney resort is entirely different from the first. Here one learns all about the two Disneyland parks: Disneyland and Disney California Adventure; three hotels on site; the differences between the Disneyland experience and that of the Walt Disney World; and various aspects of Disneyland that are overlooked by many generalist agents. One will learn about the options available in downtown Disney and how to describe them properly to potential clients.

Module 3

Is dedicated to the Disney Cruises which is an immensely rewarding product line! Commission on Disney Cruise Line products can reach up to 16%, which is much higher than 10% for other Walt Disney products. In this module, one learns all about the current ship fleet, itineraries ranging from Caribbean and Alaska cruises to Europe, Mediterranean, South America, and around the world cruises. There is information about stateroom categories, Castaway Cay private island, onboard dining and activities, kids club programs, and Castaway Club loyalty program for frequent cruisers.

Currently, there are plans to introduce new ships to the Disney cruise fleet, the Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny. So, it’s a perfect time to dive deeply into this fascinating topic!

Module 4

Adventures by Disney is one of the best-kept secrets of Disney. This module will change that! It is the guided and exclusive adventures and excursions in small groups to various locations in North America, Europe, South America, Africa, and beyond! All-inclusive, professionally-guided journeys through various destinations. Adventurous travelers who’ve “done everything” at the resorts will definitely be interested in Adventures by Disney products.

Module 5

Covers yet another Disney jewel that deserves more attention than it receives today. It’s Disney Aulani, a Disney resort and spa located in Hawaii. You’ll learn about the cultural immersion offered here, various pools, waterslides, and exclusive Disney characters and entertainment. In addition, Aulani is a perfect choice for families, couples, and intergenerational travel! If a generalist agent has never even considered recommending Aulani to their clients, that opens many sales opportunities!

How Long Does It Actually Take?

This question gets asked a lot as you can imagine. The Basics course will take about 5.5 hours to complete. In other words, you can easily finish them in one working day (if properly organized), or you can do it throughout the week. Whatever works better for you.

There are times allotted for each lesson; you are told in advance, which really helps with scheduling. Moreover, you can log off and then resume right from where you stopped, there is no need to follow a specific schedule here.

Once you complete all courses, Disney offers you to update your knowledge every year through assessments provided on the Updates tab. These are shorter lessons about the newest attractions, products, and policies that have appeared during the previous year. It is important to understand that these assessments are necessary to renew your agent benefits. Most guides don’t bother telling their students this.

How to Get Access

The registration to the College of Disney Knowledge is not an independent process. Here’s the quicket path to take to start your CDK learning:

Step 1 – Work with a Host Agency

First of all, you have to find a job at one of the host agencies. You cannot apply for the position of a Disney Travel Agent yourself. The website www.DisneyTravelAgents.com is accessible only to those who have an affiliation with a certain agency or is running their own accredited agency. The host agency should have an active IATA or CLIA number.

Step 2 – Have an IATA/CLIA Number

If you have chosen to work as a travel agent, then you should have an IATA or CLIA number. In case you become a CLIA member, your yearly dues will be approximately $139.

Step 3 – Registration on the Website

Next step is the registration on the Disney website www.DisneyTravelAgents.com where you need to fill in all the required data, choose Create a New Account option and provide your IATA or CLIA number when asked to do so.

Step 4 – Training Program

In order to receive a special status, you need to take part in the training programs offered by the company. Click on “Training & Benefits” and then “College of Disney Knowledge” in the menu bar. Go to the Basics tab and finish all five modules.

Step 5 – Take an Annual Assessment

Finally, each year, go to “Updates” and pass another knowledge assessment test in order to maintain your benefits and stay updated.

Additional recommendation is to save all your login and password data right after signing in. This may come very handy if you need to check something urgently in the evening.

What You Unlock as a CDK Graduate

The completion of the College of Disney Knowledge program not only means acquiring valuable information but also gives you a package of useful tools and resources for the benefit of your business.

Marketing and Sales Tools
As a CDK graduate, you will be able to get access to the agent exclusive database of sales resources of Disney, which include professionally-made and ready-to-use promotional materials for your agency such as flyers, postcards, brochures, and many others.

Travel Agent Discounts
After successful graduation, if you meet the necessary booking requirements, you’ll have access to travel agent discounts when booking a stay in Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, and Aulani, along with discount prices for sailing in Disney Cruise Line. The discounts offered are not very significant, but they help make familiarization trips much easier!

Theme Park Admission Tickets
Agents enjoy speaking about getting free or discounted theme park admission tickets depending on the Earmarked level of your agency. The number of tickets you can get per year depends on the level of Earmark, too. The aim of getting these tickets is to visit and explore the Disney theme parks so that you can tell your clients about everything personally.

FAM Trip Invitations
Disney FAM (familiarization trip) invitations provide the opportunity for experiencing the destination first-hand at discounted or sometimes complimentary rates. FAM trips are one of the biggest perks of working in this field. It is important to remain certified in order to keep receiving them. Some host agencies organize their own FAM groups’ trips!

Current Promotions Information Access
The graduates of the program have access to quotes of current Disney promotions for clients. Moreover, in case of some Earmarks, getting access to the information before its release becomes another advantage in dealing with your clients.

Understanding the Earmarked Program

The CDK certification is your personal credential. The Earmarked Program is your agency’s credential, and the two are connected.

Disney’s Earmarked Program is a performance-based recognition system for travel agencies that demonstrate exceptional sales volume, product knowledge, and service standards. Here are the recognition tiers:

  • Bronze/Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond

It’s important to understand that you don’t need to join a host agency that is Earmarked in order to do well selling Disney. Some of the best Disney agents out there aren’t Earmarked. Just ask the agency you’re looking to join about their Disney status (if they do a lot of sales, FAM Trips etc). Any agency that has a good relationship with Disney is good enough to join!

The Commission Structure

Let’s touch on money real quick because few guides will actually mention this or provide you the relevant information. Your understanding of Disney’s commission structure will have a direct impact on your strategy and operations.

Disney pays commissions to your agency (never directly to you personally) and shares a part of that with you, depending on your agreement:

Walt Disney World Packages – standard 10% base commission
Disney Cruise Line – can be up to 15-16% for larger volume agents
Adventures by Disney – can be up to 16% commission for larger volume agents

Commission split: beginners use to start at around the same rate, but now a lot of agencies start new agents out at around 60/40 – 70/30 which is really good! Every agency has different rules setup as far as commission’s go, so be sure you get all the information on it before joining. Having a 70/30 commission split but being able to work whenever you want and not having to pay a yearly fee is better than having a 80/20 commission split but having to sell a cetain amount per year or paying a fee each month just to be an agent.

Tickets (for 3 or more days of park visits) – commissionable
• 1- or 2-day tickets are not commissionable

Annual Passes – not commissionable; agents don’t get any compensation on those
Dining Plans – approx. 5% commission is offered, which is less than package commission

Here’s an example for you: booking a $7,000 Walt Disney World family vacation package will give your agency $700 in commissions. If you have 60/40 split in your favor, you’ll earn $420 on one booking. Now do the math yourself and figure out why Disney agents charge additional fees for large cruise bookings where commission is significantly higher!

One thing that is rarely talked about (probably because it’s somewhat awkward) is that, considering the 10% cap for package commissions, as well as time intensity involved in booking Walt Disney World vacations, some agents will charge a booking fee. This topic is definitely controversial because travel agents get paid through suppliers and most clients come to you because they don’t want to pay extra to have their trip planned. I highly recommend not charging any kind of fee unless the booking is really big or really complicated, otherwise potential clients will go to someone else who isn’t charging fees (there’s plenty of them).

How to Actually Use CDK Knowledge with Clients

After getting certified you’re going to want to put your training to good use!  This is how high-performing Disney agents use the course materials:

Ask first, then answer. Many young Disney agents think they need to show off their knowledge when they reach out to a client. But the best way to do that is first to ask some basic qualifying questions. Why did they call you specifically about Disney? Are they going for the first time, or have they been there already? How old are their children? What’s their budget, and what does it really matter to them? The CDK program will teach you how to respond appropriately based on what they tell you.

Mention your certification tactfully. If you’re asking for someone’s money and time, it might make sense to mention the credentials that qualify you to plan their vacation. In the vast majority of cases, clients are thrilled to hear that you know exactly what you’re talking about because you’ve completed the official training course. If you have a website you can put a College of Disney Knowledge certification logo on your home page or somewhere in your social media posts. This way people will know that you’ve been trained without having to try and fit it in somewhere

Be sure about windows. You should know when dining starts, Lightning Lane becomes available for guests staying in a hotel, and Early Park Entry is possible, all from memory. It will help you stand apart from a client who would just google it.

Sell your services strategically. With the information provided in the CDK training, you can suggest upselling strategies. For example, when planning Disney vacations, you could create a chain of bookings: Walt Disney World → Disney Cruise Line → Adventures by Disney → Disney resort in Hawaii. All four of these will get you paid and strengthen the relationship with your client.

Stay up-to-date. The Disney ecosystem doesn’t stand still, and neither do the requirements for an efficient Disney travel agent. There are new cruises, resorts, and experiences. We’ve seen the Lightning Lane system change a number of times over the past couple of years. So an annual assessment of your skills is an hour or two well spent!

Mistakes Disney Agents Make

Everyone makes mistakes, even agents that have been in the game for a long time. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, in face the opposite, you should be learning from your mistakes and the mistakes of others! Here’s the ones I’ve run into the most over the years.

Neglecting the annual assessment. Surprising as it may sound, there are plenty of people whose benefits remain blocked, because they neglect the completion of the annual assessment. If your portal displays any benefits as “unavailable,” chances are that you haven’t passed the test yet. Be sure to check your benefits page at the beginning of each calendar year.

Neglecting Adventures by Disney and Aulani. These two modules are usually among the last ones being addressed and finished, but this poses a significant business threat. In particular, the Adventures by Disney program is extremely valuable and lucrative, offering a unique product which is available to only a small niche of agents specializing in the product.

Failing to make use of the marketing materials. The marketing materials provided to certified Disney CDK graduates represent one of the biggest advantages which are hardly ever taken advantage of. If you fail to use these tools, you deprive yourself of the opportunity to showcase your certification.

Seeing Disney as just another vendor. While there is no doubt that Disney is another supplier of the travel agency, it represents a passion ecosystem, where passion makes all the difference. The key difference between agents who deliver high-quality services in Disney-related matters and those who cannot compete is passion.

Neglecting hands-on experience. As mentioned above, the program teaches the product to the best of the learner’s ability. However, nothing beats actual experience acquired from visiting Walt Disney parks or resorts. Use your agent discounts to gain some.

Insider Knowledge That Makes You Better

But the CDK training alone is not enough! The best Disney agents have even more knowledge added on top of it. Here’s some insider knowledge I think you should know:

Individual CLIA Membership & Embark ID: Becoming a member of CLIA individually will give you access to even more cruise training opportunities, cruise ship inspections, and increased professional credibility while working with cruise products. For some Disney agent benefits, you may require a CLIA card specifically.

SOT Regulations: Being in a state such as California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, or Washington, you would need to know about Seller of Travel regulations and how they affect you. It’s usually handled by your host agency, but still, it’s better for you to be aware of your state regulations.

planDisney Panel: Disney hosts an online community where they invite Disney fans who aren’t necessarily agents to ask questions. Called planDisney panel, it will give you an amazing opportunity to see firsthand what kind of questions your Disney passengers have. PlanDisney panel Q&As are also incredibly informative.

Nat Geo Expeditions: The CDK site also offers training for Nat Geo Expeditions, which is a product from the Disney portfolio. It’s another under-sold Disney product that attracts people with the adventurous experience.

Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World: Also, there is some sort of CDK training for the Four Seasons Resort at Walt Disney World, a luxurious hotel associated with Disney but not branded.

Is the CDK Enough to Become a Disney Specialist?

Short Answer: The CDK is crucial, but top performers take it beyond that point. The CDK provides you with your base level of product knowledge. However, what it cannot do for you, and what you will have to acquire independently, is operational competency with the booking engine, client relationship skills, and practical experience that can be applied to conversations.

PlanDisney communities, third-party Disney fan communities, and Facebook groups organized by the host agency would all fall into the category of supplemental knowledge resources. The ability to follow official Disney Parks social media channels means that you’re aware of announcements well ahead of time since you won’t see them on the CDK platform for months. Reading publications such as Travel Market Report offers context and allows you to think strategically about the Disney brand.

Here’s what sets the top Disney specialists apart from the rest – they successfully combine CDK training with:

  • Regular park visits at least once a year
  • At least one voyage with the Disney Cruise Line for first-hand cruise experience
  • Active engagement within the Disney travel agent community
  • An active social media profile to promote their Disney expertise
  • Completion of annual CDK assessment without fail

It’s the whole package.

This Is Your Starting Line, Not Your Finish Line

CDK is undeniably one of the most crucial steps in the life of every successful travel agent when it comes to Disney sales. Not only does it provide access to an excellent training opportunity, but its completion automatically grants access to a variety of business tools that you can use immediately after getting the certificate. However, there’s more that you need to understand: The top-selling agents not only go through the process, but they do it on a regular basis.

These individuals have no problem completing annual evaluations. Not only do they take advantage of the promotional materials, but they also use them consistently on a weekly basis. These agents take visits to the park and sail on the ships with genuine enthusiasm, which allows them to share their experiences with customers without putting any effort into it.

It should be noted that Disney vacation packages are one of the most emotionally charged purchases within the industry. Parents plan family vacations that include Disney resorts years in advance; newlyweds choose the resort for their honeymoon experience. This means that, when planning Disney vacations, you will deal with people who entrust you with a significant amount of money in order to create their unforgettable memories.

That is why CDK should be your first step towards becoming a professional Disney agent!
